Economy 7 in NI: Check the Night Rate Before You Switch
Published on 15 June 2026 by Wee Switch NI Team. Last reviewed 15 June 2026.
How Northern Ireland households with Economy 7 should compare day rates, night rates and standing charges before choosing a tariff.
Economy 7 is different from a standard 24-hour electricity tariff because you pay separate day and night unit rates. That can work well for homes that genuinely shift usage overnight, but it can be poor value if most electricity is still used during the day.
It is most likely to make sense where a meaningful share of usage is overnight, such as storage heating, hot water timed for the cheap period, overnight EV charging, or appliances that can safely run while you are asleep or early in the morning.
