Common Electricity Bill Mistakes and How to Spot Them

The billing issues worth checking before you overpay or miss a problem after switching.
Most bills are routine, but small errors can cost money or cause confusion. A five-minute check is especially useful after a switch, a house move or a tariff change.
Estimated readings can be too high or too low. Submit your own reading if the estimate is far from the meter, and keep a photo for your records.
Compare the tariff name, unit rate, standing charge and payment method against your welcome email or contract. Query anything that does not match.
Check that recent payments, Direct Debits, refunds and promised welcome credits are listed correctly. Keep bank records until the issue is resolved.
Take readings on the day you move in and out. Without them, final and opening bills can be based on estimates or the wrong dates.
Standing charges usually apply for each day you are responsible for the supply, even if usage is very low. Check the date range before assuming the charge is wrong.
